Who is responsible if my belongings are damaged during a move?

There is nothing worse than having something of yours damaged, broken, or ruined during a move. What do you do if your movers have dropped, cracked, or scratched one of your items? Who’s responsible? Who can you turn to? And how will you be compensated? Watch this Flex TV episode to find out.

Who is responsible if my belongings are damaged during a move? So you’re moving, you decided to hire movers or a moving company and the worst has happened. Something of yours was damaged during transit, during loading or unloading and now you want to know who to turn to, what to do, how it works, here’s the breakdown for you. So moving companies offer you coverage for your items during transit in case they are damaged or lost or anything else like that should happen to them. So the moving company is actually responsible. How responsible they are and how you get compensated for it, here’s the breakdown of that. Every moving company you work with is legally required to provide you with coverage for your items of a minimal value. This is required by law so they will offer it to you no matter what and it will be included in your price. This coverage is usually based on the weight of your items. It works in a way that they offer about 60 cents per pound per item for any item that you have in moving. So for example if you have a 10 pound item you’re gonna be compensated for about six bucks. Now obviously this is not gonna cover all the value of all your items. So what are you gonna do? Option 2. Moving offer you also full value protection coverage. This is based on the actual value of your items. Obviously this costs extra, you need to pay for this, but it’s worth it because if anything of yours is damaged, you get a compensation at the price of the market value currently of the item that is damaged or lost. So obviously this is a better way to protect the actual worth of what you’re transporting. For those of you who have really expensive, special, one-of-a-kind items, this is not going to be enough. And so what you’re going to want to do is go with option number three. Option number three is working with a third-party insurer to get additional insurance for your items. There you state and declare the value of your items. You’ll be given an offer for a premium. You pay that premium and then your stuff is protected considering its value. and you can sleep easily knowing that no matter what happens you’re going to have it covered. So if something of yours is damaged during transit with your moving company, your moving company is the one responsible, but how you compensate depends solely on the type of coverage you’ve chosen. I definitely recommend going at least for the full value coverage because obviously the basic coverage is not going to be enough unless you’re transporting a bunch of junk. So if you care about your items, know that things do happen in transit, they happen during loading and unloading. There’s no way to really avoid it, so the best way is to protect it ahead of time. At the very least, get the value of your items protected, insured, so that you don’t regret it later.
