Wondering if you need to be on-site when your storage container is picked up? Our Flexpert discusses common practices and considerations for ensuring a smooth pickup process. Learn about the benefits of being present during pickup and alternatives if you can’t make it.
Do I need to be there when a storage unit gets picked up? Now, that’s a really good question. A lot of us have very, very busy schedules. The storage company usually provides a window of about three hours of arrival, and some of us don’t have the time to just wait around and be there while they do. So, do you actually need to be there when they’re picking up your storage unit? The answer generally is no. You don’t actually need to be there. As long as you notify the company ahead of time that you’re not going to be present and as long as you make sure that they have very convenient and open access to where the unit is placed on your property, you don’t need to be there. They can definitely pick it up on their own without your presence. That being said, I do recommend that you or someone you know and trust be on site when the storage unit is being picked up. This is because sometimes some of the companies use a lot of very elaborate and heavy equipment to take the unit from you. And in the process, they might damage something like your driveway or your lawn, anything like that. So you want to be on site to make sure that you’re overseeing the process and that if there is any kind of damage, you’re there to see it and report it immediately so that you can hold the company responsible. Another thing that’s important to note is that if you are getting a unit delivered as opposed to being picked up, you definitely are going to want to be there. This is because you’re going to want to let the company know how exactly you want them to place the unit and where so that it’s convenient for you for the duration of storage or the duration of loading, that you have very convenient access to it, and that it doesn’t disrupt anything else like your neighbors, parking space, the street, or anything like that. So definitely be there or have one close friend there, neighbor, anything like that to oversee the process if you’re having a unit delivered. In conclusion, you really don’t have to be there if the unit is being picked up from your home. However, I really do highly recommend that you or someone you trust is on site so that you can oversee the process and make sure everything is running smoothly and just the way you want it.
