Today we have a question from Claire who wants to know, how much does a small storage unit cost? Now this is a reasonable question for a lot of people that want to store something, get some clutter out of the way, but they don’t have that many items to store. Obviously, you’re not going to want to pay a lot of money every month for a huge storage unit if you’re not using all the space. So you want to know how much it’s going to cost to store? Just a few items. Basically, when it comes to storage, there are some standard storage unit sizes. We’re talking 5 feet by 5 feet, 5 by 10, 10 by 10, 10 by 15, 10 by 20. Those are basically the standard sizes. So usually when you’re talking about the smallest storage unit, we are talking about 5 feet by 5 feet. So Claire, the short answer is, according to SpareFoot.com, in 2023 the average price for a 5×5 storage unit was about $50 or $2 per square foot. So this is pretty much the price. Of course this varies greatly based on where you are and how long you store for. If you store for longer periods of time you usually get a significant discount, whereas if you store it month to month you’re going to be paying full price. And of course the location has a very strong impact on price, just like it does on rent in a building or a home. Also, there is another option. There’s a thing called social storage. Websites like neighbor.com offer you the opportunity to store your stuff in someone else’s home on a month-to-month basis, paying them rent, and then sometimes you’d be offered a really small space like an attic or closet, you’ll end up paying very low rent, like 20 or 30 bucks a month, and you can still get the storage space. Of course it has its own disadvantages, like walking into somebody’s home whenever you want to visit your storage, but that’s totally up to you. If you feel comfortable with it and you want to save some money, it’s quite a good way to go. In conclusion, Claire, the prices do vary depending on where you are. Obviously if you’re renting a storage unit in Oklahoma, it’s not going to cost nearly as much as a storage unit in New York City. So you really want to do your research, call around, ask different facilities for their prices, and get the best price for you and the best size to fit your belongings that you want to store. I hope I answered your question, Claire
