Looking to create some extra space to fix, construct, or work on your hobbies? Find out whether you can rent a storage unit as your creative workspace.
Hi there, welcome to Flex TV. My name is Hope and I will be answering all of your storage related questions. Today’s question comes from Frankie who wants to know, can storage units be used as a workshop? And that’s a really good question. Some of us will want to require more space to do repairs, craftsmanship, art, any kind, any number of things. If we don’t have a garage or a spare room, a storage unit seems like it would be a really good solution because it costs a lot less than a room in your home and you can still work in it. There’s a lot of space. So I’m going to divide the answer to this question into two. There are two options of storage units. There are portable storage units and there are warehouse storage units. Now when it comes to portable storage units, you have to ask yourself if you want to turn your portable unit into a workshop, what do you need changed in it so it can become a workshop? Do you need any shelving? Do you need any lighting? Do you need an extra window? If you need to make any serious changes like that, you’re not going to be able to do that with a rented container from a storage provider. They’re not going to allow that, so that’s going to be a problem. If all you need to do is just position a desk inside and put some tools inside, it shouldn’t be an issue, no problem, and you can do it on-site with a company that offers on-site storage. The second Second type of storage, of course, is warehouse storage. If you have a unit inside a storage facility, and it’s basically a room, can you use it as a workshop? Now, here it’s a little bit more tricky. Definitely not all providers will allow this. As you probably know, most facilities have visiting hours, and they also have a list of what your unit can and cannot be used for. So sometimes they will be fine with it, and other times they will have an on-site manager or security guard simply kick you out if you’re going to misuse the room. So if you know ahead of time that you want to use your unit as a workshop, I really, really suggest that you be very upfront and clear about it. Tell your representative what you want and make sure that it’s allowed so you don’t have problems with them later and you can do what you want. So I hope I really answered your question, Frankie. Thank you so much for sending it over.
